The Oder (Szczecin) Lagoon in the southern Baltic Sea is a heavily eutrophicated and degraded coastal ecosystem. We applied a systems approach framework to critically evaluate whether existing water-management measures achieve water-quality objectives for the river and lagoon systems. Our simulations reveal that the existing water-quality objectives for the river and the coastal waters are not sufficiently complementary. We suggest new water-quality threshold concentrations, which are in agreement with the European Water Framework Directive, and we calculate acceptable maximum nutrient loads for the Oder River. These calculations suggest that external nutrient-load reductions in the river basin alone seem insufficient to achieve good water quality in the...

Together, lake ecosystems and local human activity form complex social–ecological systems (SESs) characterized by feedback loops and discontinuous change. Researchers in diverse fields have suggested that complex systems do not have single stable equilibria in the long term because of inevitable perturbation. During this study, we sought to address the general question of whether or not stable social–ecological equilibria exist in highly stressed and managed lacustrine systems. Using an integrated human–biophysical model, we investigated the impacts of a species invasion and ecosystem restoration on SES equilibrium, defined here as a compromise in phosphorus management among opposing stakeholders, in western Lake Erie. Our...

Managing the Resilience of Lakes: A Multi-agent Modeling Approach Ecology and Society
Janssen, Marco A; Indiana University; maajanss@indiana.edu; Carpenter, Stephen R; University of Wisconsin-Madison; srcarpen@wisc.edu.
We demonstrate an approach for integrating social and ecological models to study ecosystem management strategies. We focus on the management of lake eutrophication. A model has been developed in which the dynamics of the lake, the learning dynamics of society, and the interactions between ecology and society are included. Analyses with the model show that active learning is important to retain the resilience of lakes. Although very low levels of phosphorus in the water will not be reached, active learning reduce the chance of catastrophic high phosphorus levels.

Agricultural watersheds are affected by changes in climate, land use, agricultural practices, and human demand for energy, food, and water resources. In this context, we analyzed the agricultural, urbanizing Yahara watershed (size: 1345 km², population: 372,000) to assess its responses to multiple changing drivers. We measured recent trends in land use/cover and water quality of the watershed, spatial patterns of 10 ecosystem services, and spatial patterns and nestedness of governance. We developed scenarios for the future of the Yahara watershed by integrating trends and events from the global scenarios literature, perspectives of stakeholders, and models of biophysical drivers and ecosystem services. Four qualitative scenarios were created to...

Evolution of Forest Systems: the Role of Biogeochemical Cycles in Determining Sustainable Forestry Practices Ecology and Society
Flueck, Werner T.; National Council for Scientific and Technical Research (CONICET), Argentina; Institute of Natural Resources Analysis, Universidad Atlantida Argentina; Swiss Tropical Institute, University of Basel; wtf@deerlab.org.
The exploitation of natural resources such as forests leads to sustainable forest management (SFM). The key question is how to define and parametrize “sustainable use.” Promoting forest use that conserves spatial characteristics of forest landscapes and the structure and composition of forest stands was proposed as a way of maintaining elements of biodiversity such as species richness and genetic variation. However, to establish the parameter space for sustainable forest use, it is essential to consider the nutrient requirements of forest systems, that is, plants and animals, the need for fertilizer application, and the effects on biogeochemical cycles, a cornerstone of biological evolution and, thus, biodiversity. The use of forest...

NUTRIENT REMOVAL FROM SWINE WASTEWATER IN A COMBINED VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL FLOW CONSTRUCTED WETLAND SYSTEM REA
Bôas,Regina B. Vilas; Fia,Ronaldo; Fia,Fátima R. L.; Campos,Alessandro T.; Souza,Gabriela R. de.
ABSTRACT This study aimed to assess the performance of a combined vertical flow (VFCW) and horizontal subsurface-flow (HFCW) constructed wetland systems built on a pilot scale and submitted to different configurations and organic load application rates of pre-treated swine wastewater (SWW) in anaerobic systems on the nitrogen and phosphorus removal. The average values of redox potential in the systems were between anoxic and aerobic conditions, favoring an increased nitrate concentration in VFCW. Nitrogen removal by VFCW–HFCW system can be considered as satisfactory, reaching removal values of 75%. VFCW and HFCW proved to be limited in phosphorus removal, reaching values of 48%.

SEASONAL VARIATION IN LEAF LITTER NUTRIENT CONCENTRATIONS OF VALDIVIAN RAINFOREST TREES Gayana Botánica
Lusk,Christopher H.; Matus,Francisco; Moreno-Chacón,María; Saldaña,Alfredo; Jiménez-Castillo,Mylthon.
Resorption of nutrients from senescing tissues is an important aspect of the nutrient economy of perennial plants, and a major influence on ecosystem nutrient dynamics. Attempts to interpret the adaptive significance of variation in nutrient resorption efficiency have met with little success, leading some scientists to emphasize the need for more work on the biochemical and physiological basis of resorption. One hypothesis suggests than variation in resorption is controlled by sink-source effects within the plant. According to this hypothesis, we might expect resorption to be positively correlated with plant growth rates. This could be expected not only for comparisons among species or populations, but also when comparing conspecific individuals growing at...

Phosphate fertilization influences macronutrient accumulation in watermelon cv Magnum Horticultura Brasileira
Pereira,Natanael S; Alves Júnior,Antônio Roberto; Celedônio,Wilma F; Rodrigues,Esiana A; Chaves,Sérgio WP; Medeiros,José Francismar.
ABSTRACT Studies on nutrient uptake are important to understand nutritional needs of crops, which demand may also be influenced by fertilization management, particularly P fertilization. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate macronutrient accumulation and distribution in watermelon cv. Magnum, under two forms of phosphate fertilization. The experiment was carried out in a sandy-textured Argisol in Mossoró-RN. The experimental design was a randomized block design, arranged in split plot in time, with four replicates. We evaluated dose of 137 kg ha-1 of P2O5 under two forms of fertilization [pre-planting (F0) and pre-planting + topdressing (F1)]. Triple superphosphate (SFT) was used for pre-planting applications and topdressing applications were done...

Phosphate fertilization over the accumulation of macronutrients in cauliflower seed production Horticultura Brasileira
Cardoso,Antonio II; Claudio,Marina TR; Nakada-Freitas,Pâmela G; Magro,Felipe O; Tavares,Ana EB.
abstract Considering the scarce information on nutrient extraction by plants for seed production within vegetable crops, as well as the effect of fertilization over extraction, studying nutrient accumulation in different plant parts under varied fertilization rates is necessary. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of phosphate rates on macronutrient accumulation in cauliflower plants during seed production. Five phosphate rates were studied (0, 300, 600, 900 and 1200 kg/ha P2O5), in a randomized complete block design, with four replications. Accumulation of nutrients in the different plant parts was evaluated at the end of the cycle (vegetative and reproductive, the latter divided in seeds and inflorescence). Data were submitted to analysis of...

Nutrient enrichment effect on macroinvertebrates in a lowland stream of Argentina Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Cortelezzi,Agustina; Ocón,Carolina; Oosterom,María V. López van; Cepeda,Rosana; Capítulo,Alberto Rodrigues.
ABSTRACT One of the most important effects derived from the intensive land use is the increase of nutrient concentration in the aquatic systems due to superficial drainage. Besides, the increment of precipitations in South America connected to the global climate change could intensify these anthropic impacts due to the changes in the runoff pattern and a greater discharge of water in the streams and rivers. The pampean streams are singular environments with high natural nutrient concentrations which could be increased even more if the predictions of global climate change for the area are met. In this context, the effect of experimental nutrient addition on macroinvertebrates in a lowland stream is studied. Samplings were carried out from March 2007 to...
